Holiday shopping for me is not fun...ever. During the holiday season, I randomly decided to go through the vendors at Union Square. I'm happy I did because not only did I get what I was looking for, but I stumbled upon the works of Mr. Matt Schwartz. He was incredibly friendly and I was honored to get one of his prints.
When you look at Matt's poloroids you see time. You see a time that is sweet and happy. You see pretty girls laid out with musical embellishments or a lollipop. It is that sweetness that captured my eye. The aesthetic he perfects creates a vintage feel. You don't know when the photograph was taken, but you know that it captured
something ageless and it is likely you will feel like you were there once in a dream. I decided to ask him if he'd like to be featured and he kindly agreed. I plan on buying more of his work and maybe even ask him if I could model for him....*wink*wink*.
Who is Matt Schwartz?
a photographer, musician on hiatus, a writer, basically i am trying to capture the uncapturable. i want to add smells and sounds to photos to make them come alive. i go through months of extreme highs where i create and feel perfect and then months where i want to hide in movies and books and question my entire existence. right now that i am in ecuador i am happy.
She Hit Pause is an interesting name for your studio, how did you come up with that one?
photography is hitting pause on a moment. i mainly take photos of girls and feel that the girl is being paused in a moment forever. even though i am pressing the button she is hitting pause.
You have an interesting technique you use to create your photographs...how do you do that?
i take large format polaroids, pull apart the film and rub the negative on to water color paper, aka polaroid transfer
People say your photos are nostalgic..do you feel this way?
yes, the technique surely creates a nostalgic feel. i also like to use classic props that are timeless. for example records, typewriters, vintage toys, etc.
What have been your favorite ones to shoot?
i love photographing the girls. i like to walk the thin line between erotic and beautiful.
What do you love about shooting weddings the most and how do you feel you stand out in this genre of photography?
weddings are fun as long as i keep it at a minimum. i only shoot weddings for people that have discovered me through my polaroids. i am shooting a lot of other artists, musicians, and people doing fun stuff. i take a no bullshit approach. i am not a photographer that will sit down with a couple with fluffy packages and bows.
i will show them photos and tell them that i will capture the uniqueness and authenticity of your day. weddings are beautiful, though there is also a quirkiness and nervousness that is there throughout the day. i will never direct a couple, only follow.
When I talked to you last you said you had done some music...are you still involved with it and does music have a big influence on your work?
yes, i have started writing again and am ready to start putting the words to music.
my passion for music somehow went right into my photography. i love incorporating instruments and telling stories though my photos in a way that i will hopefully be able to bring back to music. i released a cd maybe 4 years ago. i put too much emphasis on trying to get on a little label. my goal is to now write a record that is solely for me.
Where do you find your pin up models?
all of my models are friends or people that have purchased my work
What has been the single most important moment of your life?
I guess recording my cd, going on tour and hearing it in the radio, though seeing the reaction people have to my images is quickly rising to the top.
Favorite line from a movie?
don“t have one. but i should, since i hide in movies as much as they will allow.
