It's very rare that I meet people who are ambitious. It's even more rare to meet an ambitious person who is amiable and actually good at what they do. In doing this magazine I try and find people who are out there doing their own thing and doing it well. Melodie J. Smith is a woman who is doing just that. She is a successful entrepreneur putting out some really great product. Melodie owns her own T-Shirt design business (Joy 9 Designs) as well as freelancing in graphic and web design. She's created fine art for Siren Monthly as well as web ads for Verizon. She also has had short stories and poetry published in local publications. Melodie is quite the achiever and her baby, Joy 9 Designs, shows her true talent for design and art. You go girl!

How long have you been in business?

5 years making shirts, 1 year actual serious business

What spawned the idea of your own t-shirt business?
My love for silk screening, design and customization

What types of clothing do you sell? Brands?
I sell my brand Joy 9 Design & Sugar Free, I sell t-shirts, tank tops, muscle tees, panties and a cute line of work out clothes

What sells the most? What's most of your clientele like?
Every girl is a little different so I try to make everything just a little different to meet the likes of all adorable girls, but I guess the most sold Tee is "I Heart Unicorns"

What makes your store unique?
My profound interest is unique, indie hipster girl fashion with a pop princess twist

Anyone famous buy something and if not who would you most like to see wearing your clothing?
Not yet, however we only have an online store right now, so who knows, I would love the Le Tigre girls to shop Joy, Kirsten Dunst, Lindsay Lohan, we love everyone though

If and when you do have a store, what music would be playing?
None applicable, however if we did have a store, it would be super sexy, Retro German & Italian porno soundtracks picture the themes to Betty Page & Music for Gracious Living

How do you decide what's going in the store?
I run my designs by my super talented boyfriend Thomas Hurley III (of Pleaseeasaur) and all my Joy girls of course, which consists of my tight-knit girl buddies each of them comes from a different style genre so I get a great varied response (nice plug Miss Smith)

Any plans on expanding to other areas?
Would love to just get something going in every state that is why Internet is soo great, but I would love a Beverly Hills store and a Manhattan location if and when i get actual stores, right now products are sold within in different boutiques around the Los Angeles area

What piece in the store is currently your favorite?
the entire Gritty In Pink collections, the images come from mixed media paintings I did you can see the full painting show online at www.grittyinpink.com

Favorite cartoon character and why?
I am the most like Thaddieus Toad from the Wind in the Willows (Disney movie-40s) but I also adored Ariel from the Little Mermaid, after seeing the Little Mermaid it spawned a year long obsession with mermaids and for that reason I believe I have to say she is my favorite.
