Momma's Gots to Look Good Too!

So, Mother's Day is Sunday and I would like to point out that not every mom has to wear the pants pulled up to her boobs. I happen to know a lot of sylish mom's. It's hard being a mom and trying to still fit that fashionable bill. I wouldn't know anything about this since I'm not a mom. I can tell you about my mom and I's history together with fashion. It all started with Garanimals. My mom is very structured. She has rules when it comes to fashion. She likes everything to match perfectly. If she's wearing hot pink shoes, you better believe there will be hot pink somewhere else in her outfit. My mom is also individual in her fashion sense because she loves making her own clothes and standing out. She did the same for me growing up. No daughter of hers would not be wearing labels unless it was an Aura original to school. I did get complimented up the wazoo about the fabulousness of each ensemble. My mom LOVED making my dance dresses. She LOVED putting me in different outfits which reflected HER style. I wasn't allowed to pick my clothes out until I was almost 12 years old. There were times I wanted to die when I had to got to church wearing Mom and Daughter matching outfits. We were always late for church....interesting how the aisle to the altar became runway central. She always had to sit up front.

Our fashion history together has been a battle since I was a little girl. It has not changed. I rebelled in high school with wearing all black all the time. Band shirts adorned my closet as well as the latest Benetton fashions. "You go back up stairs and you put on some color!" she used to say, "In Panama, prostitutes wear black!" she chimed. I'd go upstairs and put a red bandana in my hair. There you go. Another thing my mother likes....YELLOW. I abhor this color in every shade. I freakin' loathe the color yellow and she just loved to put it on me. She said it looked good on me because of our skin tone. Um, yeah, no shiny happy people here!

I actually wasn't allowed to wear dresses when I was little. I could wear them the first day of school, but fought relentlessly to wear them thereafter. Mom felt that dresses were to only be worn on special occasions. Going shopping with my mother used to be a nightmare. She would pull some hideous dated blouse out and say, "I think this would be cute on you." In actuality it would be cute on her. Make-up was not allowed on my face until the age of 16. I would sneak it to school and promptly arrive home just as I left that morning. When it was time for me to "paint my face", she took me to the Max Factor kiosk to have someone "show" me how to put it on and what colors would be good for me. At the time it was embarrassing, but now I look back and think how sweet of her that was.

The battle is semi over at this point. I actually get complimented by her at times, usually for my shoe choice. She's appalled at the number of shoes I have obtained, which is hilarious considering I remember a time when her closet was wall-to-wall shoes. I tell her she doesn't have enough. I will say this about my mother, the woman knows how to make a dress. She knows how to make people take notice to what she's wearing. It also helps that she's beautifully adorned and put together at all times. It doesn't hurt that she's petite and attractive. The woman can call a man over without so much as a word. Now, she still dresses on point but her style has changed a little bit more matronly with t-shirts that have seashells and cats on them. I have refined my style as well...I mean I still dress like I did when I was in my twenties, but there are times when I'm not afraid to fem it up with some classic Anne Klein pumps and a cinched waist dress. Mom, now knows that when she does buy me clothes they have to be of a certain color theme. She doesn't know that just because it is that color theme, if it has big ruffles or poofy sleeves, I aint' wearin' it.

I loved watching my mother dress up. It was the one time I felt she was happy with herself. Plus, she was quite young in my early years and to see her as stylish as she was just reflected on how young she was at the time. I secretly wish she kept all those fabulous clothes from the 60's, I know I wouldn't be able to fit in the size 0 she was but man, I loved those clothes. So, here's to my mom on Mother's day and her upcoming Birthday!

Justin Hyte Works Real Hard

I like to give props where props are due and for Justin Hyte, well the man gets mad props from Anti-Mag. I like Justin cause he's not a dick. He's really good at what he does and he doesn't expect you kiss his ass. Mr. Hyte just did a nine page layout for Time Out New York and it's...well, quite fabtastic. Have a look at the shoot here:

Congrats to you Justin Htye! You rock!

Oscar Fashon MANIA!

Ok, so it was of course the usual suspects for Oscar standout fashion. There could have been someone else there who looked more fabulous but you would never know because we want to bash our proper celebs. I mean who is E! to say who looks good and who doesn't...and really who cares? I just like fashion and I like to celebrate those who look good in it. I'm not expert, nor do I have the right to say that someone looks like a bag of smashed assholes. So, without further adieu, here are my viewings:

Anne Hathaway
Anne Hathaway in Marchesa...I love this red...gorgeous.
Cameron Diaz
I loved Cameron's dress, but I hate these pale colors she wears. Dior by John Galliano.
Hilary Swank
There is noone that wears a dress the way Hilary Swank does...man, she can wear a dress...excuse me, Donatella..yeah, can you send one of these over ASAP?
Jennifer Garner
Jennifer Garner in Oscar de la Renta...she's just so pretty, I love this overall look on her.
Katherine Heigl
Katherine Heigl is so cute...this Escada dress is absolutely stunning on her...it's simple, but has that shoulder detail that makes it complete.
Penelope Cruz
Here is another woman who can do no wrong on the carpet for me. I love most everything she wears and this Chanel gown is gorgeous on her.
George Clooney
I don't know who George Clooney was wearing but he looks as handsome as always...his date, Sarah Larson, well she could have done a bit better!
Casey Affleck
I don't know who Casey Affleck was wearing but I wish it was me...LOL..I'm kidding. I love this type of suit on a man. It's young and modern and I think he looks perfect in it.
Forest Whitaker
Um...Forest Whitaker don't need no accessories cause he's got that hot wife of his. They both look divine and Forest looks quite handsome in his Domenico Vacca tux.

So, there you have it. I have honorable mentions which include Diablo Coty because she was herself and kudos to her for showing that you can do whatever you want to do no matter what the adversity is. So stop your crying people and take a hint from Miss Coty.

Cate Blanchett looked really beautiful in her Dries Van Noten gown. She's just so glowy!

Helen Mirren is a hot older woman. I thought her dress suited her very well and it showed me just how busty Ms. Mirren is!

Why did P.Didmeister and Heidi "look at me" Klum attend the Oscars? I was confused by this. Yes, Heidi looked gorgeous in that Galliano gown and it's for charity, but I fail to see the relevancy.

I would like to add one final thing about the Oscars that has nothing to do with fashion.....JONNY GREENWOOD deserved an Oscar or at least deserved to be nominated for his score for There Will Be Blood.

Baby It's Cold Outside

It has been forever in a day! So sorry for the delayed fashion bytes. Somewhere in between going to VA for the holidays and coming back to NY, someone turned the cold dial to REALLY FREAKIN' COLD. Now that we are at witches tit level, our wardrobe must change. The trend in coats I'm seeing right now are varied. I of course am seeing the usual North Face action, long and poofy with faux fur lining and then I'm seeing more fashionable types. This would include the swing coat and double-breasted wool coats for the ladies and for the men I'm seeing a lot of trench type wool coats as well as the double-breasted numbers. Well, here's my little winter fashion summary. Yes, this might just pertain to New York fashion trends, but hey, if you wanna look chic and modern you can take a hint from this and people will think you are a trendmaster. Oooolala!

Coats - Here are the coats I'm seeing a lot of on the street. Lots of wool of course and the poof-a-lumps are a usual site due to their down linings and warmth factor. All these can be found at Macy's.

Dbl-Breasted Wool

Swing

Poof-a-Lump

Dbl-Breasted Cinch

Dbl-Breasted Wool/Cashmere

Single-Breasted Wool/Cashmere

Men's Poof-a-Lump

Hats/Accessories - I've been seeing stripes and more stripes everwhere in this category. I've also noticed many knitwear as well. All items can be found at Urban Outfitters except for the Dahlia Soleil hat.

Fingerless Gloves - these are just cute, functional...eh, but so cute, right?

Fingerless Combo

Arm Warmers - Been seeing these everywhere, way better than leg warmers

Men's Fingerless - I've seen many a guy on the train wearing these

Cable Knit Beret - these bother me for some reason...perhaps too slouchy for my taste.

Dahlia Soleil Hats...brimmed crochet hats...she makes the best ones

Brimmed Beanie - Boys everywhere in this one

Wool Paperboys and Driver Caps - these are quite popular as well, although the ears can get a little frozen

Ladies Boots - I don't see a lot of fashion trends with guys footwear, but the ladies on the other hand...And as far as winter boots for ladies, let me just say we love our heels and if it is snowy outside we tend to wear galoshes. That's just how we roll. I have a pair of black leather tall boots from Timberland I bought two years ago and I use those personally. They are fashionable yet comfortable and also can handle the elements. If something works, stick with it.

We love our heeled full lengths and patent leather is really hot right now

Ankle boots...very hot, except if you are short...you should stay away from these if you are short people!

The Cuffed Bootie....that robot Victoria Beckham was at least fashionable enough to bring this little number into the scene.

This sucker or a version of it has been seen far and wide since Fall - I don't know how to take these yet, they are not very sexy and I like some sexy in my shoe

I think that is all for my Winter Fashion Summary. With all that global warming biz, you may not need any of it, but if it is cold outside, then at least you can look hot while the temperatures drop!

NY Fashion Week - Spring/Summer

So, I know I'm a little late with this update and you must forgive me but I'm trying to get my shit together. I have to say this season is not something I'm utterly imressed with. I see a lot of WHITE....NOT everyone can wear white. Me, for instance, as soon as color or lack thereof, hits my body I feel uncomfortably stiff, my throat closes up, and I must immediately run back to my wardrobe and fetch something of the black persuasion. Look people, I do try, I can wear as it accent but full on it does nothing but make me feel like a fish out of water.

I see the cinched waist making another comeback in the next season. This makes me happy. I do love the way it accentuates shape and that is much needed. I'm really tired of the baggy and loose look. As far as color trends I see a lot of minty greens (ew), oranges, and whites and your usual neutrals. I also saw a lot of big patterns. If there was any theme to the season to come it would be ethnochic. Yes, I did make up a word.

I see the full skirt coming around again. I see more demure looks, sharp but classy and feminine. Hemlines seem to be dropping, (not good for us shorties) and didn't see a lot of shorts or pants. Lots and lots s of gorgeous full skirts. I think Betsey Johnson was clearly influenced by the tutu as most of her collection embraced that look.

For the guys, I see a lot of short sleeved, sleek button up shirts that are acoompanied by thin ties, some with a hint of color which i feel is a nice look. There is a trend right now that I'm loving for you guys and that is the VEST...take full advantage of this one because you can do it with a nice pair of jeans or slacks and look hot. I saw a guy on the train the other day who had an incredible ensemble which was accompanied by a fedora. So, guys, enough with the t-shirts and jeans....it's so over....girls like men to dress a little, not so metrosexual but show 'em you care!

I see a lot of satins and dye layering in clothes for Spring/Summer '08. I guess to sum up what I saw for Spring/Summer /08, it is sleek, supple and defined in shape. More clothing that adheres to the body and its curves which is yeah for us! I wasn't really turned on by any one collection except for Mr. Ralph Lauren because he brought it. He brought back that glamour and romance. His collection was amazing, I didn't care for the suits, women in suits annoy me, unless you're Angelina Jolie. Women need to be seen not all covered up in some suit. We are not men you know! So, instead of trying to explain what I liked and what I didn't, these were some of my picks for what I love for next Spring/Summer.

Fashion Trends Can Be a Joke...

Vera BradleyAs a statement of liberation and feminity, the 1920's brought the FlapperAmerican Apparel look. It was glamourous, risque, and fun! In 1947, fashion icon, Christian Dior, created the "New Look" which was a post-war turning point in fashion. In the 1960's, we had the Mod Look, which also put a dent in fashion trends. I don't know who out there decides that something will become popular. I don't know how we, as a society, accept and actually make a conscious decision to wear this, well as my mother would say, "porqueria"! I live in the most fashion conscious city in America and although quite stylish it is, it can go very wrong very quickly.

I had no idea and was so unaware of the Vera Bradley sensation that it was only recently a friend mentioned having to do retouch work on these bags and NOW I SEE THEM EVERYWHERE! This, this *gag* bag, is what's all the rage here? It's almost as bad as the introduction of Uggs to the fashion elite. C'mon people, what's going on here? The other trend I'm seeing a ton of, (twice in the same subway car, is this huge glasses rave. Seriously, I have horrid vision, I've worn glasses for most of my life and those big-ass glasses are probably the thing most responsible for my lack of social skills in my tweens! So, it is with disgust that I see them turning up everywhere all because of some innane American Apparel ad.
MOD

New LookNow I just have random thoughts on fashion today:

- PUT THE COWBOY BOOTS AWAY! Jesus, it's over already! (unless you actually live in the deep South or Texas or there is gonna be a Brokeback II)
- To reiterate, boots in the middle of summer are just not acceptable in my book...downright ridiculous.
- Jellies, leggings, popped-up collars...leave these in the time capsule for 1980 please
- Guys, flip-flops in the morning in the city are not attractive, it's just too early for all that feet!
- muffin-tops (this is created when your fatass can't fit in those hip hugger jeans)...get pants that actually fit that booty!
- thank you Lily Allen for bringing the cinch waste dress back.....lovely!

That's all for now. Until next time I see something horrific on the street.
