| May 9, 2008 Momma's Gots to Look Good Too! So, Mother's Day is Sunday and I would like to point out that not every mom has to wear the pants pulled up to her boobs. I happen to know a lot of sylish mom's. It's hard being a mom and trying to still fit that fashionable bill. I wouldn't know anything about this since I'm not a mom. I can tell you about my mom and I's history together with fashion. It all started with Garanimals. My mom is very structured. She has rules when it comes to fashion. She likes everything to match perfectly. If she's wearing hot pink shoes, you better believe there will be hot pink somewhere else in her outfit. My mom is also individual in her fashion sense because she loves making her own clothes and standing out. She did the same for me growing up. No daughter of hers would not be wearing labels unless it was an Aura original to school. I did get complimented up the wazoo about the fabulousness of each ensemble. My mom LOVED making my dance dresses. She LOVED putting me in different outfits which reflected HER style. I wasn't allowed to pick my clothes out until I was almost 12 years old. There were times I wanted to die when I had to got to church wearing Mom and Daughter matching outfits. We were always late for church....interesting how the aisle to the altar became runway central. She always had to sit up front. Our fashion history together has been a battle since I was a little girl. It has not changed. I rebelled in high school with wearing all black all the time. Band shirts adorned my closet as well as the latest Benetton fashions. "You go back up stairs and you put on some color!" she used to say, "In Panama, prostitutes wear black!" she chimed. I'd go upstairs and put a red bandana in my hair. There you go. Another thing my mother likes....YELLOW. I abhor this color in every shade. I freakin' loathe the color yellow and she just loved to put it on me. She said it looked good on me because of our skin tone. Um, yeah, no shiny happy people here! ![]() I actually wasn't allowed to wear dresses when I was little. I could wear them the first day of school, but fought relentlessly to wear them thereafter. Mom felt that dresses were to only be worn on special occasions. Going shopping with my mother used to be a nightmare. She would pull some hideous dated blouse out and say, "I think this would be cute on you." In actuality it would be cute on her. Make-up was not allowed on my face until the age of 16. I would sneak it to school and promptly arrive home just as I left that morning. When it was time for me to "paint my face", she took me to the Max Factor kiosk to have someone "show" me how to put it on and what colors would be good for me. At the time it was embarrassing, but now I look back and think how sweet of her that was.The battle is semi over at this point. I actually get complimented by her at times, usually for my shoe choice. She's appalled at the number of shoes I have obtained, which is hilarious considering I remember a time when her closet was wall-to-wall shoes. I tell her she doesn't have enough. I will say this about my mother, the woman knows how to make a dress. She knows how to make people take notice to what she's wearing. It also helps that she's beautifully adorned and put together at all times. It doesn't hurt that she's petite and attractive. The woman can call a man over without so much as a word. Now, she still dresses on point but her style has changed a little bit more matronly with t-shirts that have seashells and cats on them. I have refined my style as well...I mean I still dress like I did when I was in my twenties, but there are times when I'm not afraid to fem it up with some classic Anne Klein pumps and a cinched waist dress. Mom, now knows that when she does buy me clothes they have to be of a certain color theme. She doesn't know that just because it is that color theme, if it has big ruffles or poofy sleeves, I aint' wearin' it. I loved watching my mother dress up. It was the one time I felt she was happy with herself. Plus, she was quite young in my early years and to see her as stylish as she was just reflected on how young she was at the time. I secretly wish she kept all those fabulous clothes from the 60's, I know I wouldn't be able to fit in the size 0 she was but man, I loved those clothes. So, here's to my mom on Mother's day and her upcoming Birthday! | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| March 21, 2008 Justin Hyte Works Real Hard I like to give props where props are due and for Justin Hyte, well the man gets mad props from Anti-Mag. I like Justin cause he's not a dick. He's really good at what he does and he doesn't expect you kiss his ass. Mr. Hyte just did a nine page layout for Time Out New York and it's...well, quite fabtastic. Have a look at the shoot here: Congrats to you Justin Htye! You rock! March 2, 2008 Oscar Fashon MANIA! Ok, so it was of course the usual suspects for Oscar standout fashion. There could have been someone else there who looked more fabulous but you would never know because we want to bash our proper celebs. I mean who is E! to say who looks good and who doesn't...and really who cares? I just like fashion and I like to celebrate those who look good in it. I'm not expert, nor do I have the right to say that someone looks like a bag of smashed assholes. So, without further adieu, here are my viewings:
So, there you have it. I have honorable mentions which include Diablo Coty because she was herself and kudos to her for showing that you can do whatever you want to do no matter what the adversity is. So stop your crying people and take a hint from Miss Coty. Cate Blanchett looked really beautiful in her Dries Van Noten gown. She's just so glowy! Helen Mirren is a hot older woman. I thought her dress suited her very well and it showed me just how busty Ms. Mirren is! Why did P.Didmeister and Heidi "look at me" Klum attend the Oscars? I was confused by this. Yes, Heidi looked gorgeous in that Galliano gown and it's for charity, but I fail to see the relevancy. I would like to add one final thing about the Oscars that has nothing to do with fashion.....JONNY GREENWOOD deserved an Oscar or at least deserved to be nominated for his score for There Will Be Blood. January 4, 2008 Baby It's Cold Outside It has been forever in a day! So sorry for the delayed fashion bytes. Somewhere in between going to VA for the holidays and coming back to NY, someone turned the cold dial to REALLY FREAKIN' COLD. Now that we are at witches tit level, our wardrobe must change. The trend in coats I'm seeing right now are varied. I of course am seeing the usual North Face action, long and poofy with faux fur lining and then I'm seeing more fashionable types. This would include the swing coat and double-breasted wool coats for the ladies and for the men I'm seeing a lot of trench type wool coats as well as the double-breasted numbers. Well, here's my little winter fashion summary. Yes, this might just pertain to New York fashion trends, but hey, if you wanna look chic and modern you can take a hint from this and people will think you are a trendmaster. Oooolala! Coats - Here are the coats I'm seeing a lot of on the street. Lots of wool of course and the poof-a-lumps are a usual site due to their down linings and warmth factor. All these can be found at Macy's.
Hats/Accessories - I've been seeing stripes and more stripes everwhere in this category. I've also noticed many knitwear as well. All items can be found at Urban Outfitters except for the Dahlia Soleil hat.
Ladies Boots - I don't see a lot of fashion trends with guys footwear, but the ladies on the other hand...And as far as winter boots for ladies, let me just say we love our heels and if it is snowy outside we tend to wear galoshes. That's just how we roll. I have a pair of black leather tall boots from Timberland I bought two years ago and I use those personally. They are fashionable yet comfortable and also can handle the elements. If something works, stick with it.
I think that is all for my Winter Fashion Summary. With all that global warming biz, you may not need any of it, but if it is cold outside, then at least you can look hot while the temperatures drop! |
