I like going into small shops where I find little treasures to take home with me that will be rare to spot elsewhere. It is a benefit I most enjoy about Brooklyn. Within the nooks and crannies you can find a pair of earrings or a vintage blouse which you will be the sole wearer. There is a place in Brooklyn called Fuego that provides this type of exclusiveness. This is where I was very fortunate to stumble upon the wares of Dahlia Soleil.

When I think of crochet and knitting I think of a time when it was very cool to do this type of craftiness...once again thank you celebs. My friends were all into their Stitch and Bitch sessions and I wanted in. I decided to go out, buy a book, buy some materials and get to work. I had seen my mother countless times with those needles creating intricate designs as if she were a black widow preparing for her latest capture. I figured it would not be a hard task to attempt. Boy, was I wrong. Loop here, purl this, cross that...I was no good at it to say the least. I retired my needles quite quickly in defeat as my patience level is not very high.

I stood inside Fuego, browsing aimlessly until I had come across a pair of fingerless, brown and tan crocheted gloves. I of course tried them on and instantly fell in love with them as I did with a hat that complimented it completely. I exclaimed, "I must know the maker of these wares!," where the shop owner was quick to point out how quickly those go. I never thought of crocheting as a fashionable art form, but Ms. Paulette Jemott-Wiley has proven me very wrong. She makes some very stylish crocheted hats, scarves, gloves and also has a t-shirt collection. And now, here we are. I am very excited to present Paulette, creator of Dahlia Soleil and her beautiful, very fashionable creations.

You are quite the crafty one with your crocheted wares...do you only specialize in that medium or do you do delve in other things?

A photographer 1st...I also have a t-shirt line with embroidery

Do you think Crochet is making a comeback and how do you make your things modern and chic?

It's definitely making a comeback but I'm still happy its a niche market...not many people are selling so it makes my product a high demand item. I continue to evolve my products every year by paying attention to what my customers really want as opposed to what's "hot". Color combos are essential..I tend to go with "vintage" colors.

Dahlia Soleil comes from?

My beautiful daughter. (sweet)

How long does it take for you to do a piece?

I can't reveal trade secrets...LOL...let's just say someone can watch me make a hat on one train trip in NYC (dang she's fast)

Where can people find your pieces?
www.dahliasoleil.com, www.dahliasoleil.etsy.com, Ohio Knitting Mills (www.ohioknittingmills.com), Fuego (Brooklyn) and Hot Cake Designs (www.hotcakedesigns.com)

You sponsor a band, Winslow, how did this come about?
One of the singers contacted me since he wears hats for every performance and since I liked his style we decided to collaborate.

Who would you most want to see your pieces on?

Anyone that appreciates the workmanship and effort that goes into creating something from something simple to something magnificent (that would be me)

Where does the inspiration from your creations come from?

Music...yes...music. I see color and shape when I listen to certain songs. Can't really explain it...if I'm blank and I need inspiration I turn on my MP3 player and it all flows.

Do you ever walk down the street and see someone wearing your stuff?

In Williamsburg, Brooklyn all the time. I have a very loyal customer base in that neighborhood

If you could visit any planet which one would you visit and why?

The moon...alone...talk about absolute peace and quiet..:-)
