When I came to New York there were some things I had to do in order to aclimate to my surroundings. Some of these things included, finding the best place to get my coffee in the morning, knowing the nearest police station, memorizing the exact grocery schedule of the neighborhood firehouse...you know, important stuff like that! The most important thing for me was actually finding a good stylist. Upon arriving at any new salon, my methodology is the same, walk in, get the vibe of the place, check the price and ask if there are any men working at the salon. I had a bad hair catastophe with a female stylist, from that point on, it was NO MORE women cutting my hair!

OH, sometimes life slaps you in the face and shows you your ass and that's exactly what it did when I first encountered Jayme's work.

The best thing about getting your hair and makeup done by Jayme is that she listens and reads her clients perfectly. She doesn't try to make you something you're not and when you say, "I want something edgy and dark...", she delivers just that. I was honored to have her do the makeup and hair for the Anti-Mag showcase back in March and would hire her to style any music video, photoshoot or event in a heartbeat. She is truly a multi-faceted artist as she delves in all types of projects and work. I think this makes her unique because she grabs from all types of experiences rather than just one linear model. It is really difficult for me to say anything bad about this lady because she has consistently given me hair that literally stops people on the street to ask me about. I just answer, "Oh, you don't know Jayme J? Well you should really look her up!"
How long have you been a stylist and how did you discover your talent?
Pretty much all my life. I have three younger sisters so I was doing hair very early on! As far as discovering talent.... hmm, I just do what I love and hope people like it!

Do you feel you have a certain technique or style which are your mark? How would you describe your style?
I am a good listener, I dont try to force a trend or what I think is cool on my clients. I really try and hear what they are looking for and maybe add a little personal flair. I would say my slyle is old Hollywood glamour with a modern edge.

What was the coolest project you worked on? Not so cool?
A music video that showed the band dressed as iconic bands on album covers over the decades. I really enjoyed the challenge of making them look like their respective albums. As far as lame jobs.... I have been very lucky on that note... I love my job so as long as I am working, making money, and giving people the look they want... there are no lame jobs!

What colors, palettes, textures are you enjoying working with?
Of course black, red....I recently found a love for vibrant blues and pinks.... sort of East Indian colors

How do you handle working with a difficult subject?
Kill 'em with kindness. and thats the beauty of the job.... once its done I dont ever have to work with them again!

Where do you draw your ideas from?
I travel quite a bit, so I would say that I definitely draw inspiration from all over the world, as well as just things I see in the streets here in NYC.....and of course fantasy/old Hollywood movies.

Who have you most enjoyed working with?
My boyfriend, he is an absolute prince to work with!

What product is a must have for you?
What a Tease by Big Sexy Hair, makes even the limpest hair stand straight up!

Have you ever done anything unconventional to produce a certain look? If so, what was it?
I can't give up all the secrets.....haha!

What Musician would you most want to style?
Well that's a hard one... music aside I would say...Madonna, Bijork, Pink, JLO, .......these women really embody the type of person i like to work with. Any strong female that is open to trying new things and comfortable to own it when she does!
